ALEPPO COLLECTION
What started out as a meditation on Easter became a wider reflection on suffering and death. The intrusion of the Syrian civil war and refugee crisis and feelings of helplessness with the siege and destruction of Aleppo became a dominant image.
The uneven grids came to represent the empty shells of destroyed apartment buildings, while the colours of suffering and death (purples, violets, blues, dark reds, acid yellows, burnt oranges and greys) dominate the two outside columns. While visually similar, the central column breaks up the picture plane and introduces a contrasting lighter area.
Thematically it represents the unquenchable human spirit and a sense of hope for a future, for peace and a return to family life in an otherwise bleak situation.
This collection was painted in 2016. Price range: $300 to $1000.
